The Archangel Raphael Leaving Tobias's Family is a work by Rembrandt, painted in 1637 and now in the Louvre. The painting depicts the scene in which the Archangel Raphael bids farewell to Tobias and his family after identifying himself. Earlier, Raphael had accompanied Tobias on his quest to find a cure for the blindness of his father, who had sent him to collect debts. With the gall of a fish, indicated by the archangel, Tobias effectively cured his father. Again thanks to Raphael, Tobias meets Sara, whom he marries after delivering her from the demon. In this scene, Rembrandt shows the archangel taking flight, his mission complete. Tobias is on his knees, looking up in disbelief. Tobit, the father, bows down in gratitude, while Sara throws herself into the arms of Anna, Tobit's mother. Rembrandt has painted a small dog over Tobit, a symbol of human feelings, oscillating between fear and curiosity. The archangel's back is painted to emphasise his distance. He is highlighted by a play of light typical of Rembrandt's favourite chiaroscuro style. The work became part of Louis XV's collection after it was acquired from Louis-Victor de Savoie-Carignan, heir to the Prince of Carignan, Victor-Amédée I de Savoie-Carignan, in [...]
