Le bord de mer à Palavas

The Seaside at Palavas was painted by Gustave Courbet in 1854. The painting was commissioned by Alfred Bruyas during Courbet's first stay in Montpellier, "For the painter from Franche-Comté, the landscapes of the Languedoc and the Mediterranean were a revelation. This is a small-format painting. The painting is divided into two parts of equal size: the beach at Palavas and the sea below, the sky above. Only the silhouette of the artist waving to the sea breaks the omnipresent horizontality of the composition.
