Le bord de mer à Palavas
The Seaside at Palavas was painted by Gustave Courbet in 1854.
The painting was commissioned by Alfred Bruyas during Courbet's first stay in Montpellier, "For the painter from Franche-Comté, the landscapes of the Languedoc and the Mediterranean were a revelation.
This is a small-format painting. The painting is divided into two parts of equal size: the beach at Palavas and the sea below, the sky above. Only the silhouette of the artist waving to the sea breaks the omnipresent horizontality of the composition. The sea can be seen in the background, dark in the distance and lightening as it moves back towards the front.
