Les pèlerins d'Emmaüs

The Pilgrims to Emmaus is one of the most famous works by Rembrandt (1606-1669). It was painted in 1648 and is now in the Louvre Museum in Paris. The scene depicts the moment when Christ, after his Resurrection, reveals his identity to the two disciples he met at Emmaus in the way he breaks bread. The servant on the right is stopped in his tracks, reinforcing the impression of surprise of the other figures. He is highlighted by the slightly off-centre composition, where Christ, in the middle of a niche, is haloed in light. The painting was painted in oil on wood and measures 68 × 65 cm. Rembrandt also depicted the theme of the Emmaus pilgrims in another painting in the Musée Jacquemart-André. The work was part of Louis XVI's collection, acquired at the Randon de Boisset sale in Paris in [...]
