Madonna of the chair
The Madonna of the Chair (Italian: Madonna della seggiola or Madonna della sedia) is a religious painting by Raphael dating from his Roman period (1508-1520). The painting is currently on display in the Saturn Room of the Palatine Gallery in the Pitti Palace, Florence.
Produced in Rome in 1513-1514, attested in 1589 and in the Pitti Palace since the 18th century, the painting was taken to Paris by Napoleon's troops in 1799 and hung in the painting gallery of the Château de Malmaison at the request of Josephine Bonaparte. It was returned to Florence in 1815.
Its title (Madonna of the Chair) is due to the presence on the left of the back of a chair, a reference to papal furniture, suggesting that Pope Leo X himself commissioned the painting.
This tondo (oil painting on a 71 cm round panel), which "marks the culmination of Raphael's research in this format", depicts Mary holding the Infant Jesus in her arms, with John the Baptist as a child looking on devoutly, hands clasped, carrying his reeded cross between his arms.
The Virgin is holding her child close to her with both hands, the child's arm disappearing under his shawl. Saint John the Baptist, with his cross, is relegated to the edge of the painting, behind the folds of the Virgin's cloak.
Mary and Jesus both look towards the viewer, while John's gaze focuses on the sacred couple.
The Virgin wears an elaborate shawl over her shoulders and a detailed bracelet on her wrist. Her head is girded with a turban.
