Madonna of the Goldfinch

The Madonna of the Goldfinch (Italian: Madonna del Cardellino) is a religious painting by Raphael. The painting is currently on display at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. Painted around 1506, the Madonna del Cardellino is an early work by the painter, dating from the time of his stay in Florence. Its title is due to the presence of a goldfinch (cardellino) depicted in the painting. According to Vasari, the painting was made in Florence for Lorenzo Nasi, a wealthy woolen fabric merchant, on the occasion of his marriage to Sandra Canigiani, a member of Florence's upper middle class. The couple lived on the steep Costa San Giorgio and on 12 November 1547, the house collapsed. "Among the rubble, Raphael's painting was found, shattered into seventeen pieces, which were recovered and restored as best they could. X-ray analysis revealed that the fractures between the various pieces had been consolidated with nails and sealed with new paint. The painting entered the collection of Cardinal Giovan Carlo de' Medici in 1666, and was then moved to the Uffizi, where it was restored once again, the work being completed in 2008. Some of the preparatory drawings are in the Ashmolean Museum (P II 517, P II 516, P II 634). There are also a number of early copies that attest to its success, the most successful of which can be seen in the Victoria and Albert Museum, in the sacristy of Vallombrosa Abbey and in a private collection.
