Jason or Jason et Médée (in French: Jason et Médée, in English: Jason and Medea) is a painting by the French Symbolist painter Gustave Moreau dating from 1865. Oil. The subject is the Greek mythological hero Jason, famous for his adventures on the ship Argos, and Medea, Princess of Colchis. This is one of Moreau's best-known mythological paintings. It followed his return to the world of painting at the previous year's Salon with Oedipus and the Sphinx, and was exhibited at the following year's Salon with the allegorical painting The Young Man and Death, which was again a success. It is now part of the Musée d'Orsay collection in Paris.
Iason, prince of the Thessalian city of Iolkos, has been commissioned by his uncle, King Pelias, to bring back the treasure of the far eastern country of Colchis, the fur of the golden-haired sheep. Iason recruits the best heroes from all over Greece, builds the ship Argos and sets off on an adventure to Colchis. After a long journey, Iason reached Colchis and, with the help of Medea, a princess skilled in magic, he overcame the trials of King Aietes, killed the giant dragon guarding the skins and returned home with the skins in one piece.
Moreau depicts Iason defeating the monster with the help of Medea's magic. The hero Iason, depicted as a young man, holds his right hand in the air and chews on his victory.
