Quand te maries-tu, or Nafea faa ipoipo in Tahitian, is a painting by Paul Gauguin, painted in French Polynesia in 1892.
Sold for 7 francs when the artist died, it was bought from the Gauguin family in 2015 by the Emir of Qatar for 300 million dollars, making it the second most expensive work of art in the world. It had been entrusted to the Louvre Museum in Basel, the Kunstmuseum Basel, on a long-term loan by the foundation of the family of industrialist Rudolf Staechelin (1881-1946), who had built up his collection at the time of the First World War.
In the foreground are two figures representing two stages: education for the crouching person as she performs a Buddhist gesture, and the experience of love as the woman behind holds a flower petal in her hand, signifying that she is looking for a husband. Dressed in a pale pink, she is wearing a black look as if to express jealousy towards the other woman, since Gauguin preferred her, and the other in a bright red and orange sarong is wearing a passive look and seems to be reflecting on the title that Gauguin gave to his painting "Quand te maries-tu" ("When do you get married"). In the background, there is a tree and a small pool of water, and two people can be seen in the field, giving the painting depth and a vast [...]
