The artwork
Piazza San Marco, Venice
This view of Saint Mark's Square in Venice (in Italian: Piazza San Marco) is an oil painting by the Italian rococo painter Canaletto. He painted it after his stay in Rome in 1723.
It was commissioned by a Venetian nobleman to decorate his palace. The commission comprised a total of four canvases: the Rio dei Mendicanti, the Grand Canal as seen from the north-east from the Palazzo Balbi towards the Rialto Bridge (both in the Venetian Ca'Rezzonico Museum), the Grand Canal as seen from the Campo San Vio and finally this one, Saint Mark's Square (both in the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum in Madrid).
The work presents one of the most characteristic images of the Italian city, Piazza San Marco, with the Basilica of San Marco in the background and its bell tower. On the left are the Procuratie Vecchie and on the right the Procuratie Nuove.
