Tivoli, the gardens of the Villa d'Este is an oil on board measuring 44 × 61 centimetres, painted by Camille Corot in 1843.
Corot visited the Villa d'Este in Tivoli in December 1827 during his first trip to Italy. At the time, he left only a sketch of a partial view. It was during his third trip to Italy in 1843 that he spent more time in Tivoli, drew, took notes, painted a view of the Cascatelles (Paris, Musée du Louvre) and three views of the Villa d'Este, including this one, which places the viewer on the terrace.
The viewer finds himself in an enveloping atmosphere that unifies the composition of the painting, boldly built on the emptiness of the foreground. A recent technical examination revealed that the young boy perched on the balustrade had been added later to give meaning to an otherwise masterful composition: the verticals formed by the trees, for example, are superimposed on the horizontals of the roofs and the balustrade.
The tones of the painting are impregnated with a mist in the grey range, barely enriched here and there by a local tone, dotted with the green touches of the cypresses.
