Portrait de Fernand Halphen enfant

Fernand Halphen as a child is a portrait painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir in 1880 of the French composer Fernand Halphen. Since 1995, the work has been part of the Musée d'Orsay collection in Paris. From an early age, Fernand Halphen (1872 - 1917), the descendant of a wealthy Jewish family involved in commerce and banking, received a musical education. He studied with famous musicians such as Gabriel Fauré, Ernest Guiraud and Jules Massenet. In 1896, he won second prize in the Prix de Rome. His work includes a symphony, an orchestral suite, a ballet and chamber music. On 16 May 1917, he was killed in action during the First World War. At the 1879 Salon, Renoir had great success with Madame et ses enfants by Georges Charpentier. This was because the wife of the publisher George Charpentier was a major figure in the Paris cultural scene. After the Salon, Renoir received some welcome commissions, such as this portrait of the young Fernand Halphen in a blue sailor suit. The painting is remarkable for its clear contours and vivid colours. It marks the transition between Renoir's Impressionist period of the 1870s and the "Ingresque period" between 1883 and [...]
