Saint Sébastien
Asparagus is an oil painting on canvas produced by Édouard Manet in 1880, signed "M" in the top right-hand corner of the canvas. It is currently in the Musée d'Orsay.
The painting, which is very small (165 × 215 mm, or 169 × 219 mm), depicts a single asparagus placed askew on a table, with its purple tip to the left and its tail sticking out over the edge. In the foreground, the vegetable occupies the entire width of the frame, in the lower half of the composition. The edge of the table forms an oblique line rising from the bottom left of the frame towards the right"; the wood of the table, under the tray, forms a brown triangle cutting through the bottom right-hand corner. The background shows the white top veined with bluish grey, probably marble".
In 1880, art collector Charles Ephrussi commissioned Édouard Manet to paint a still life of a bunch of asparagus - Une botte d'asperges - for 800 francs. On receiving the work, he gave him 1,000.
