Seated Figure of Summer
"Catherine II - Lawgiver in the Temple of the Goddess of Justice" ("Portrait of Catherine II as Lawgiver in the Temple of the Goddess of Justice") is a ceremonial portrait of the empress by Dmitry Levitsky, filled with numerous symbols and allegories.
In 1783, Chancellor Alexander Bezborodko asked Levitsky, with whom he was acquainted, to create a ceremonial image for his house in St Petersburg, later known as the "Portrait of Catherine II - the Lawgiver". The portrait of Catherine II was also intended to open a series of portraits of the holders of the Order of St Vladimir and was given a central place in the Order's Duma. Levitsky later created more than ten other portraits of nobles who had received the decoration, but the building was never completed.
The programme for the allegorical portrait was probably composed with the help of Nikolai Lvov.
The painting is an allegory of the image of the just man, sacrificing his peace to the public service of the sovereign. Catherine II is depicted in the Temple of Themis (whose statue with its attribute - a balance - is in the background on the right), pointing towards an altar with the inscription "For the common peace", in a white robe and coat with a ribbon from the Order of St Vladimir and a chain from the Order of St Andrew, with a laurel wreath on her head. The statue of Themis (without the eyepatch but with the scales) and the statutes at the empress's feet indicate her state activity, the ships - her victories on the Black [...]
