Lors d’un de ses séjours en France, Vincent Van Gogh est saisi d’une nouvelle crise de folie qui le fait intégrer l’asile de monastère Saint-Paul-de-Mausole, à Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. Ainsi, depuis sa chambre d’hôpital, l’artiste peint un de ses plus grand chef-d’œuvre. Les « effets de nuit » sont alors une obsession chez le peintre, il écrit même à son frère à ce propos : « Il me faut une nuit étoilée avec des cyprès ou, peut-être, au-dessus d'un champ de blé mur ». Le ciel chaotique et les formes tourbillonnantes de la composition expriment l’état tourmenté dans lequel le peintre se trouve, alors que la folie déforme peu à peu sa perception du monde.
