Historical context and creation of the work

Vincent van Gogh created this work in 1888 during his stay in Provence, France. He settled in Arles, a small town in the south-east of the country, where he hoped to find inspiration to renew his art. The region's unique light, warm colours and encounters with other artists would contribute to this period of profound creativity for van Gogh.

A daring night scene

While paintings of night scenes were rare at the time, van Gogh decided to take on this technical and artistic challenge. He wrote to his brother Theo: "I have a terrible need for - shall we say the word - religion. So I go at night from time to time to see the nocturnal effects". This painting is therefore a real milestone in the history of painting night scenes, and an innovation in pictorial techniques for lighting effects.

Detailed description of the work

La Terrasse du Café le soir is an oil on canvas measuring 81 x 65 centimetres that depicts a lively night scene in the centre of Arles. In the foreground, we can see the illuminated terrace of a café where several figures are seated. The customers seem to be enjoying the mildness of the night as they chat or sip their drinks.

Colours and lighting

Van Gogh uses a play of bright colours to create a warm, festive atmosphere: yellow and orange tones dominate the composition and contrast with the deep blue of the starry sky. Lighting also plays an important role, as van Gogh carefully chooses light sources to highlight certain elements, such as the tables and chairs in the café or the cobblestones in the Forum square.

An original point of view

The artist adopts a slightly plunging viewpoint that gives the scene an impression of height. This choice offers an interesting perspective on the square and makes it easier to grasp the arrangement of the various elements making up the canvas.

Interpretations and symbolism of the work

The Terrace of the Café in the Evening is notable for its rich symbolism and multiple interpretations. Some see it as a representation of human solitude, while it can also be perceived as an image of simple pleasures.

A multifaceted work

One of the most interesting aspects of this work lies in its ambivalence. Van Gogh manages to create an atmosphere that is both festive and melancholy, where the pleasure of social life coexists with a certain solitude. The starry sky seems to send a message of peace and harmony, while the warm colours recall the beauty and gentle pace of life in Provence.

The posterity of the work

Since its creation, La Terrasse du Café le soir has never ceased to fascinate and inspire generations of artists and spectators. Today, its influence extends far beyond painting and can be found in a variety of fields including literature, cinema and advertising.

This artwork is a painting from the modern period. It belongs to the post-impressionism style.
