The Olive Trees

Olive trees are a recurring subject for the painter Vincent van Gogh. He painted at least fifteen pictures of olive trees in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence in 1889. At his own request, he lived in an asylum from May 1889 until May 1890, painting the asylum gardens and then, when he was allowed out, the olive trees. Painting the countryside, the surrounding fields, the cypress and olive trees, allowed Van Gogh to connect with nature through art. He produced no fewer than fifteen paintings in 1889. The olive tree paintings had a special significance for Van Gogh. Those painted in May 1889 represent life, divinity and the cycle of life, while those painted in November 1889 attempt to symbolise his feelings about Christ in Gethsemane. His paintings of olive pickers illustrate the relationship between man and nature by showing one of the cycles of life, life or death. It is also an example of how individuals, through their interaction with nature, can connect with divinity [ref. needed].
