The Virgin and Child with Canon Joris van der Paele
The Virgin with Canon Van der Paele or The Madonna with Canon Van der Paele is a painting by the early Flemish painter Jan van Eyck, begun in the autumn of 1434 and completed in 1436. It depicts the Virgin and Child enthroned in a semi-circular space, probably a church interior. To her right stands Saint Donatien and to her left the donor of the painting, Canon Joris van der Paele, presented to the Virgin by Saint George. The painting - oil on oak panel - was intended both to celebrate the dedication of the donor, who was still alive when the work was created, to his church, and to serve as a support for his prayers, making it a work of devotion. The painting has retained its original frame. The frame bears Van Eyck's signature as well as the donor's coat of arms and inscriptions in Latin relating to the saints depicted. The Virgin with Canon Van der Paele is considered to be one of Van Eyck's most important and ambitious works.
The painting was commissioned by Joris van der Paele (c. 1370-1443). The donor has been identified by the paternal and maternal coats of arms depicted in each corner of the frame. Joris van der Paele was born in Bruges around 1370 and worked in Rome as a papal [...]
