Vue des Alyscamps is an oil-on-canvas painting by Paul Gauguin in Arles in 1888, when he was living with Vincent van Gogh.
It is a landscape with three people walking along the canal. Behind the trees lies a historical motif: the Roman necropolis of Arles, consecrated in the 3rd century by Saint Trophime (the first bishop of Arles). By the 19th century, however, nothing remained and the sarcophagi were empty. All this gives the place a melancholy air. However, Gauguin confined himself to highlighting the tower and dome of the building, paying more attention to the surrounding landscape and its nuances, translated onto the canvas by brushstrokes with regular strokes, already used in the landscapes of Pont Aven, reminiscent of those of Paul Cézanne.
The orange foliage of the trees mingles with the dark greens, evoking an autumnal atmosphere. In fact, the period of cohabitation between Vincent Van Gogh and Paul Gauguin lasted only a few weeks, from October to 24 December 1888, the day on which the final break between the two occurred, with Van Gogh's severed [...]
