The Portrait of Johanna Staude (in German: Bildnis Johanna Staude) is an unfinished portrait of a woman at chest height by the Austrian artist Gustav Klimt, one of the last of his works. Johanna Staude (1883-1967), born Widlicka, was the sister of the painters Leopold and Anton Widlicka and of the opera singer Richard Widlicka. She taught artistic discourse and served as governess to Peter Altenberg. Staudet also modelled for Egon Schiele.
The portrait of Johanna Staudet differs from previous portraits of women in the quiet simplicity of its composition. Peter Altenberg is known to have called Johanna a "modern angel". The blue-eyed woman is shown in the portrait with a short, pointed hairstyle. She is wearing a turquoise blouse made from fabric produced by the Viennese workshops in Martha Albert's "leaf" pattern, and looks very confident. Johanna's neck is adorned with a feather boa that draws attention to her face, which is finished except for her mouth. When the model asked why Klimt didn't finish it, he reportedly replied, "Because then you'd never come to the studio again."
During the difficult years of the First World War, the artist worked on several commissioned portraits of women, which were left unfinished due to his sudden death. Many of his portraits are painted on a plain background.
