Galileo Galilei before the Roman Inquisition - painting by the Italian painter Cristian Banti dating from 1857. The painting depicts Galileo Galilei on trial before the Roman Inquisition. As a supporter of Nicolaus Copernicus's theory, Galileo Galilei exposed himself to a trial. Cristiano Banti has given this scene a romantic feel. Galileo is portrayed here as a strong and proud man, maintaining his courage in the face of trial. In reality, however, the scientist was already old and weak by then. He had also previously been introduced to the instruments of torture to which he would be subjected if he did not publicly renounce his opinions.
