Ivan the Terrible and his Son
Ivan the Terrible and his son Ivan on 16 November 1581 (Russian ???? ??????? ? ??? ??? ???? 16 ?????? 1581 ????; Ivan Grozny i syn ego Ivan 16 noïabria 1581 goda), also known as Ivan the Terrible Kills His Son (???? ??????? ??????? ?????? ????, Ivan Grozny oubivaïet svoïego syna), is a painting by Ilia Répine between 1883 and 1885.
The work depicts an episode in the life of Ivan the Terrible: he, in the grip of anger, has just dealt a fatal blow to his son the Tsarevich Ivan Ivanovich. The painting shows the mad, remorseful face of the Tsar, and the gentleness of the dying Tsarevich, forgiving his father with his tears.
This moving painting follows terrorist attacks by the narodniki, their repression by the imperial authorities and executions. Over and above its tragic intensity, it is intended to provoke a rejection of violence. In this context, the depiction of a murderous and infanticidal Tsar, just after the assassination of Alexander II, is more than just a historical painting. It gave rise to a controversy that led to the canvas being torn up in 1913, and continues to this day.
The painting, which was restored to its original condition after the laceration, is still kept in the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, but it suffered another attack in May 2018, which seriously damaged it.
