La Source
La Source is a painting by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres begun in 1820 and completed in 1856. Once hung in the Louvre, it is now on display at the Musée d'Orsay. Two of his pupils, the painters Paul Balze and Alexandre Desgoffe, helped Ingres with the decor and the jar. The pose is borrowed from another of Ingres' nudes, the Venus Anadyomene, and the model may have been Christine Roux.
Completed in 1856, and exhibited privately in Ingres's studio, it was sold to Count Charles-Marie Tanneguy Duchâtel for 25,000 francs. It remained in the Count's collection until 1878, when it was bequeathed to the Louvre by his wife, the Countess Duchâtel. It remained in the museum's collections until 1986, when it was transferred to the Musée d'Orsay, inventory RF 219.
The painting is a vertically elongated rectangle. The figure forms part of the central third of the painting. The painting depicts a naked woman holding a jar pouring water. She is facing the viewer and her posture is hunched, with her right leg slightly bent. Her torso is slightly tilted to the left, and her right arm is bent over her head, holding the container that rests on her left shoulder.
