The Portrait of Charles Baudelaire is a painting by Gustave Courbet produced in 1848.
It depicts Charles Baudelaire at the age of 26. Gustave Courbet painted the Portrait of Baudelaire in 1848. It depicts his poet friend, who was young at the time, aged 26, as the "accursed poet". This picture was painted at a time when Baudelaire was still unknown. Baudelaire is shown in the centre, deep in thought and inspiration. Courbet depicts the classic elements of writers with pen and books. The colours are dark but the light highlights the setting rather than Baudelaire, creating a parallel with the Spleen and the Ideal".
Dated 1840 by Courbet, the portrait of Charles Baudelaire seems to have been painted around 1847, when the two men were dating. At the 1855 Universal Exhibition, it was exhibited as no. 8 in the pavilion that Courbet had built to display his works. In 1859, it was acquired by the publisher Poulet-Malassis, who fictitiously sold it to Asselineau on 15 June 1862 to avoid having it seized.
