Théodore Géricault canvas prints & artprints

Théodore Géricault was born in Rouen on 26 September 1791.

He focused on drawing at an early age, joining the studio of Carle Vernet in 1808, before moving to that of Guérin, where Academicism and Romanticism were the order of the day. He acquired a reputation in 1812, with his work The Charging Chasseur, drawing the eye of the viewer with his energy, colour palette and pictorial techniques. Géricault decided nevertheless to undertake a journey of initiation to the heart of Italy, discovering the works of Michelangelo and Rubens. On returning to Paris, the painter immersed himself in his discoveries and embarked upon a huge composition inspired by the shipwreck of the Medusa. Géricault became the master of an art that was somewhat morbid, inspired by the Reign of Terror in France, helping this unique artist to make his name.

Théodore Géricault died in Paris on 26 January 1824.
