The Seven Deadly Sins and the Four Last Things
The Seven Deadly Sins and the Four Last Human Steps is a painting attributed to Hieronymus Bosch, produced around 1500 or later. In oil on panel, the painting depicts a series of circular scenes. It is currently on display at the Museo del Prado in Madrid (Spain).
Four small circles, representing the "Death of the Sinner", the "Last Judgement", "Hell" and "Glory", surround a larger circle representing the seven deadly sins: anger at the bottom, then clockwise envy, avarice, gluttony, sloth, extravagance (later lust) and pride in scenes of everyday life rather than allegorical representations of the sins.
The centre of the central circle is supposed to represent the eye of God, within which we can see Christ emerging from his tomb. Below this image is the Latin inscription Cave cave d[omi]n[u]s videt (in French: Attention, Attention, Dieu vous voit).
Above and below the central image are quotations in Latin from Deuteronomy, containing the following words: above (32:28-29) "For they are a nation devoid of judgment, and there is no understanding in them", and "Oh, if they were wise! They would consider this, they would think about what will happen to them in the end" underneath (32:20) "I will hide my face from them, I will see what their end will be".
