Campagne de France, 1814

1814, La Campagne de France (alternative title 1814) was painted by Ernest Meissonier between 1860 and 1864. One of the works in his Napoleonic cycle, along with 1807, Friedland and Le Matin de Castiglione (unfinished), it depicts Napoleon I and his staff during the French Campaign of 1814. Considered to be Meissonnier's most famous work, it sold in 1890 for a record price for a painting by a contemporary artist. The painting is now part of the Musée d'Orsay collection. Napoleon and his staff are depicted in the snowy, muddy Champagne countryside. In addition to the Emperor, Ney, Berthier, Drouot, Flahaut and Gourgaud can be seen. Exhibited at the Salon of 1864. Purchased in 1866 by the banker Gustave Delahante for 85,000 francs. Sold in 1890 by Delahante to an anonymous dealer (known by his initials M. B.) for 500,000 francs, the dealer sold the painting to Alfred Chauchard for 850,000 francs, the highest price at the time for a painting by a living artist. Bequeathed by Chauchard to the Louvre, it entered the museum's collections in 1909, and was transferred to the Musée d'Orsay in [...]
