Woman at Sunset (German: Frau vor untergehender Sonne ) is a painting by the German painter Caspar David Friedrich, produced around 1818. It is on display at the Folkwang Museum in Essen. The painting depicts a woman seen from the back, her arms slightly open, facing the sun, which is hidden by her body, in front of a meadow landscape that becomes slightly undulating in the background. We can make out a few trees to the left and, closer, a few rocks framing the woman. She is dressed in a long, dark dress, in which the light of the setting sun illuminates only the wrists and shoulders, allowing us to guess the colour - probably blue. The rest is in the woman's shadow. Her high hairstyle clears the nape of her neck. The landscape is in semi-darkness, but the sky itself is luminous, a gradation from yellow on the horizon to deep orange as it rises towards the top of the painting. Caspar David Friedrich used the same type of view (figure seen from the back in front of a landscape) in his work The Traveller Contemplating a Sea of Clouds. The painting is sometimes mistranslated as Woman in the Morning Sun, as the image alone makes it impossible to distinguish between sunrise and sunset, but the German title removes any doubt. With the orange hue of its sunset, Friedrich may well be faithfully chronicling the historic eruption of the Tambora volcano in Indonesia in 1815.
