Saint Louis, roi de France et un page

Saint Louis, King of France, and a Page is a painting by El Greco between 1590 and 1597. The painting is 117 cm high and 95 cm wide and is kept in the Musée du Louvre in Paris, which acquired it in 1903. It depicts the crowned King of France, Saint Louis, in mid-thigh armour, holding the fleur-de-lys sceptre and the hand of justice, the regalia of the kingdom of France. On his left, a young page dressed in a doublet and shirt with a collar and sleeves with a strawberry is wearing his helmet. They are dressed in the fashion of the late 16th century, with a Venetian influence, recalling the painter's initial training. The king's armour recalls his participation in the Seventh and Eighth Crusades and his defence of Christianity. This is one of Greco's most verist works. Saint Louis, grandson of Alfonso VIII of Castile, was also highly revered in Spain at the time, where it was not until 1671 that a king, Ferdinand III of Castile, was canonised. The painting was commissioned by Luis de Castilla, a friend and future executor of El Greco's will, who wanted a representation of his patron saint.
